Council Directive 2001/113/EC of 20 December 2001 relating to fruit jams, jellies and marmalades and sweetened chestnut purée intended for human consumption harmonizes the labelling of a number of products defined in Annex I including jam and marmalade. The latter must be made only from citrus fruit. Member States must implement the Directive before 12 July 2003.

In order to take into account existing national traditions on the use of these sales names, the terms marmelade and marmelade af citrusfrugter have been used in the Danish language version and the terms 'ìáñìåëÜäá' and 'ìáñìåëÜäá åóðåñéäïåéäþí' have been used in the Greek language version for the sales names 'jam' and 'marmalade' respectively.

In the German language version, these are Konfitüre and Marmelade respectively.

The Austrian authorities have now informed the Commission that in certain local markets the term Marmelade has also traditionally been used for jam.

It is therefore proposed to amend the German language version of the Directive in order to take into account of this existing tradition on the use of the sales names jam and marmalade in certain local markets in Austria.
