Directive 1992/23 - Tyres for motor vehicles and their trailers and to their fitting

1.

Summary of Legislation

Motor vehicles with trailers: tyres (until 2017)

The European Union is harmonising the national type-approval for tyres and their fitting to motor vehicles and their trailers.

ACT

Council Directive 92/23/EEC of 31 March 1992 on tyres for motor vehicles and their trailers [See amending acts].

SUMMARY

The Directive applies to original and replacement tyres fitted to motor vehicles in category M1 (motor vehicles used for the carriage of passengers comprising of no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat) and trailers in Council Directive 70/156/EEC concerning the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the type-approval of motor vehicles and their trailers.

It concerns the technical requirements for the construction and testing of tyres for passenger cars and trailers and requirements relating to the fitting of the tyres to the vehicle.

The new Directive 2001/43/EEC aims to reconcile the safety requirements with the need to limit the noise arising from contact between tyres and road surfaces.
