Directorate-General Internal Market and Services (MARKT) - Main contents

This Directorate-General was dissolved and its components integrated into other DG's on November 1st 2014. A large section of the DG was refurbished and integrated into the new Directorate-General for Financial Services. Another fairly large section of DG Internal Market was integrated into DG Industry and Enterprise. Other sections were transferred to DG Justice and DG CONNECT.

Prior to dissolution the most important task of this Directorate-General was the coordination of the policy of the European Commission concerning the internal market. The internal market's goal was to secure the free travel of persons, goods, services and capital within the EU. Hindrances of this free travel had to be decreased as much as possible. The DG also has specific policy-making tasks in a number of economic sectors.

The main tasks of DG were:

  financial services (banks, insurances)

  company law

  public auction (for government contracts)
