Dit directoraat-generaal i was tot 2011 betrokken bij de coördiniatie van buitenlandse hulp namens de Europese Commissie i. Het werkte onder meer samen met de Europese buurlanden en Rusland. De Milleniumdoelen van de Verenigde Naties i stonden centraal bij de werkzaamheden van de organisatie.

EuropeAid was verantwoordelijk voor alle stappen die genomen werden in het proces rond buitenlandse hulp. Daarbij gebruikte het directoraat de EU-strategieën als leidraad en werd intensief samengewerkt met andere directoraten-generaal. Omdat humanitaire hulp niet gebonden is aan de langetermijndoelen, werd deze hulp door andere directoraten verzorgd. EuropeAid concentreerde zich op hulp voor de lange termijn.

Per 3 januari 2011 is het Directoraat-Generaal EuropeAid samengevoegd met het Directoraat-Generaal Ontwikkeling (DEV) i onder de nieuwe naam Directoraat-Generaal EuropeAid Ontwikkeling en Samenwerking (DEVCO) i.
