Dit directoraat-generaal1 was tot 2011 betrokken bij de coördiniatie van buitenlandse hulp namens de Europese Commissie2. Het werkte onder meer samen met de Europese buurlanden en Rusland. De Milleniumdoelen van de Verenigde Naties3 stonden centraal bij de werkzaamheden van de organisatie.

EuropeAid was verantwoordelijk voor alle stappen die genomen werden in het proces rond buitenlandse hulp. Daarbij gebruikte het directoraat de EU-strategieën als leidraad en werd intensief samengewerkt met andere directoraten-generaal. Omdat humanitaire hulp niet gebonden is aan de langetermijndoelen, werd deze hulp door andere directoraten verzorgd. EuropeAid concentreerde zich op hulp voor de lange termijn.

Per 3 januari 2011 is het Directoraat-Generaal EuropeAid samengevoegd met het Directoraat-Generaal Ontwikkeling (DEV)4 onder de nieuwe naam Directoraat-Generaal EuropeAid Ontwikkeling en Samenwerking (DEVCO)5.

    Directoraten-generaal (DG's) zijn de grootste zelfstandige eenheden binnen het ondersteunend apparaat van de Europese Commissie. De directoraten-generaal zijn onderverdeeld in directoraten, die weer zijn onderverdeeld in administratieve eenheden. Daarnaast zijn er nog een aantal diensten, zoals de Juridische dienst.

    The European Commission is the executive body of the EU and runs its day-to-day business. It is made up of the College of Commissioners, 27 European Commissioners, one for each member state, who are each responsible for one or several policy areas. In addition, the 'Commission' also refers to the entire administrative body that supports the Commissioners, consisting of the Directorates-General and the Services.

    De Verenigde Naties (VN) zijn een mondiale organisatie van overheden, samenwerkend op het gebied van internationaal recht, mondiale veiligheid, behoud van humanitaire rechten, ontwikkeling van de wereldeconomie en het onderzoek naar sociaal-maatschappelijke en culturele ontwikkelingen.

    Dit directoraat-generaal had de taak om de armoede in ontwikkelingslanden te verminderen en uiteindelijk uit te bannen. Ook stimuleerde het duurzame ontwikkeling, democratie, vrede en veiligheid. Het ontwikkelingsbeleid van de EU geeft uitdrukking aan de solidariteit van Europa met arme landen en belichaamt fundamentele waarden als democratie en mensenrechten.

    This Directorate-General was established on January 3rd 2011 as the DG's of EuropeAid (AIDCO) and Development (DEV) were merged. Between 2011 and 2014 the DG went by the name of DG Development and Cooperation — EuropeAid (DEVCO). It was renamed DG International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO) in 2015 and DG International Partnerships (INTPA) in 2021.
