VVD roept EC en Raad op tot actie tegen Litouwen - Main contents

Gisteren heeft het Litouwse parlement een wetsvoorstel bekrachtigd waarin uiterst homofobe bepalingen zijn opgenomen. Volgens de nieuwe wet, die in maart 2010 in werking zal treden, moet alle 'propaganda' als het gaat om homoseksualiteit en biseksualiteit verbannen worden van scholen en andere plaatsen waar jongeren zich ophouden.

VVD-Europarlementariër Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert i: "Deze wet gaat rechtstreeks in tegen één van de belangrijkste basisprincipes van de Unie, te weten: gelijke behandeling voor iedereen. Litouwen moet op het matje worden geroepen en de wet per onmiddellijk terugdraaien. De Middeleeuwen liggen immers al weer 'n tijdje achter ons."

Action after the adoption of homophobic law in Lithuania

Yesterday, the Lithuanian Parliament rejected the President's veto and confirmed that the law on the Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information will enter into force in March 2010. According to the law, "propaganda of homosexuality and bisexuality is banned from schools and any other places where it can be accessed by youth".

Clearly, this new law could be prejudicial to understanding and tolerance of homosexuals as well as moving contrary to Article 6 of the EU Treaty. Paragraph 1 of this article states that "The Union is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law, principles which are common to the Member States."

1.      Does the Commission agree that this new law contradicts the values of the EU? If not, why not?

2.      Is the Commission willing to intervene immediately? If not, why not?

3.      In view of the recent developments, is the Commission planning to make full use of the available instruments such as starting up an infringement procedure? If not, why not?
