D66-Europarlementarier Gerben Jan Gerbrandy pleit vandaag tijdens de plenaire vergadering in het Europees Parlement voor veel druk op Ministers van Milieu voor een ambitieuze biodiversiteitstrategie.

20% beschermd gebied

Morgen neemt het Europees Parlement een resolutie aan die Lidstaten oproept om concrete afspraken te maken over het behoud van biodiversiteit tijdens de biodiversiteitconferentie in Nagoya, Japan, eind deze maand. Opvallend is dat het Europees Parlement oproept dat 20% van de aardbol tot beschermd gebied wordt verklaard. Daarnaast moet biodiversiteitsverlies per 2050 stoppen.

Gerbrandy: “Wij moeten een mislukking zoals de klimaatconferentie in Kopenhagen voorkomen. Het stoppen van het verlies aan soortenrijkdom moet bovenaan de internationale agenda staan. Onze economie rust op wat de natuur voortbrengt. Ook onze welvaart komt dus in gevaar als we de vernietiging van de natuur niet stoppen.”

Naast politieke druk vindt Gerbrandy druk vanuit de samenleving essentieel. "Ik ben vorige week een Facebook campagne en een online petitie gestart om burgers een platform te bieden. Op die manier kunnen ze hun stem laten horen over het belang van biodiversiteit." Volgens de D66 Europarlementariër kan druk vanuit de samenleving een positieve bijdrage leveren aan de uitkomsten van de conferentie. Hij zal de verzamelde steun persoonlijk overhandigen aan de onderhandelaars tijdens de conferentie in Japan.

Dutch MEP calls for pressure at international biodiversity summit

Dutch MEP Gerben Jan Gerbrandy calls for a large amount of pressure on the Ministers of Environment for an ambitious biodiversity strategy today in the plenary session of the European Parliament.

Tomorrow the European Parliament will pass a resolution that urges Member states to make concrete arrangements about the preservation of biodiversity during the biodiversity summit in Nagoya, Japan, at the end of this month. Noteworthy is the call of the European Parliament that 20% of the earth should be declared as protected area. In addition, the loss of biodiversity should stop as of 2050.

Gerbrandy: "We have to avoid a failure like the climate summit in Copenhagen. The stop of biodiversity loss has to be on top of the international agenda. Our economy is based on what nature provides. Our welfare thus comes into trouble if we do not stop the destruction of nature."

The Dutch MEP is of the opinion that pressure from society is needed besides political pressure. "I started a Facebook campaign and an online petition last week to provide a platform to citizens. In that way they can let their voice be heard about the importance of biodiversity." According to Gerbrandy, pressure from society can contribute to a positive outcome of the conference. He will hand over all collected signatures personally to the negotiators during the conference in Japan.
