Hans van Baalen MEP, President of Liberal International, expresses his solidarity with and support for the peaceful and democratic forces of change.

His thoughts especially go out to everyone that he met during the 56th Congress of Liberal International, held in Cairo in 2009, who made the Congress a beacon of hope to all who fight for human rights, civil liberties, the rule of law and democracy in Egypt and throughout the Arab world.

“Ayman Nour of the El Ghad Party and Osama Al-Ghazali Harb of the Democratic Front Party as well as other liberals and democrats should play a crucial role in the transformation from authoritarian rule to true democracy. They can always rely on Liberal international. President Mubarak of Egypt must understand that the only way to prevent the triumph of religious and political radicalism is to handover power to a broad transition government in which Egypt’s liberals and democrats are well represented."

Liberal International (LI) is the world federation of over 100 liberal and progressive democratic political parties. LI was founded in 1947 to strengthen liberal protection from totalitarianism and communism. The founding “Oxford Manifesto” is widely considered as one of the most important political documents of the 20th century. It has since become the pre-eminent network for promoting liberalism, individual freedom, human rights, the rule of law, tolerance, equality of opportunity, social justice, free trade and a market economy.
