Fed up with high roaming charges? Time for action! - Main contents

International calling, texting and mobile internet are far too expensive, according to Judith Merkies, MEP for the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA). In 2011, EU-commissioner Neelie Kroes proposed to lower maximum rates to 24 cents per minute for phone calls and 50 cents per MB for mobile internet. Kroes didn’t propose a new rate for texting. The current maximum is 18 cents per message. “Kroes’ proposal is way too cautious”, says Merkies. “We have a single market in Europe, haven’t we? Then why these high costs? I want to eliminate the differences between national and international rates as soon as possible.” Read more and take action easily via twitter or e-mail. Please do that before the 28th of February, because then the ITRE committee in the European Parliament will draw up amendments for Kroes' plan.

More ambition needed: abolish the market for roaming

Merkies prefers more ambitious plans than those of Commissioner Kroes. Merkies wants to abolish the market for roaming in the EU by July 2014. “From then on, it doesn’t make a difference if you call from another EU member state to Amsterdam, Lisbon or Berlin.”
