European citizens travel more than ever. City trips, skiing holidays, business travel, all have risen exponentially these past years thanks to the establishment of the European single market. However, voice and data roaming remain far too expensive within the European Union. Over expensive costs are charged for international mobile. The single market has failed for telecoms.
Do you agree that using your phone anywhere in Europe should not cost more than at home? Come help support my social media campaign, and help us abolish roaming costs by July 2014. Just one click is enough!
European Commissioner Kroes should be more ambitious
The proposal by the European Commission to lower maximum rates to 24 cents per minute for phone calls and 50 cents per MB for mobile internet is not ambitious. People, who travel, for business or pleasure, will still be facing exorbitant invoices for roaming. Europe has a single market and should streamline roaming costs in the 27 member states. In a European Union with a single market there shouldn't be any difference in calling from one EU member state to another. Whether you are calling from Amsterdam, Lisbon, Berlin or Bucharest; the cost should be the same. Abolishing roaming costs will bring about a competitive and truly European telecoms market. I would like to see Ms Kroes having the same ambition.
That is why I have proposed an amendment to abolish the European roaming market by July 2014. This will be voted soon in the parliamentary committee and plenary.
