What's best: development aid or trade? - Main contents

'We are wondered about the support in the Netherlands for development aid.' Scientist Christine Carabain i (NCDO, National Commission on International Cooperation and Sustainable Development), presented the results of the opinion survey 'The Dutch and the World: how do Dutch people see their own role in world problem's during the debate on the 11th of October 2013.

The survey shows that two third of the Dutch population is in favour of helping poor countries in their development. People realise that we live in one world and that countries are mutually dependent. 'The choices people make in, for example, the supermarket have worldwide consequences.'

The other speakers Sander van Bennekom (Oxfam Novib) and Arend Jan Boekestijn i (former MEP with portfolios Defense and Development Aid) confirmed the statement that development aid isn't the same as sending money. They also agreed that trade is better for economic growth than development aid.
