Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (SANTE)

This Directorate-General is responsible for EU legislation in the areas of food safety, safety of products and public health.

The main tasks of the DG are:

  • to protect and improve public health
  • to guarantee food safety
  • to protect the health and welfare of farm animals
  • to protect crops and forests

On January 1st 2015 the consumer protection unit was moved to the DG Justice and Consumer Affairs i.
