Nemtsov murder throws Russia back into the dark ages - Main contents
ALDE Group leader in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, has today reacted to the murder of Boris Nemtsov, the political leader of our sister party Parnas, who was shot dead last night on the streets of Moscow:
“I am shocked and saddened by the murder of Boris Nemtsov. The Russian nation has lost a strong courageous politician and an economic reformer.
This is yet more terrible proof that Russia is sliding into dark times. It's the responsibility of Russian authorities to ensure that political opposition can breath and demonstrate freely. I call for an independent investigation of this murder. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the Russian people.”
Hans van Baalen, ALDE spokesman on Russia and Ukraine, is horrified and revolted by the murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov:
“Nemtsov defended freedom and democracy in Russia for more than 20 years. As an active politician, Nemtsov opposed Putin's desire to turn Russia into an autocracy, his violation of fundamental human rights and interventions in neighbouring countries such as Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. If Putin wants to avoid being held directly accountable for this awful murder, a transparent and effective police investigation has to be started immediately.”
