Mission to Nigeria (18-19 June 2015) - Main contents

I visited Nigeria to assess on the ground the humanitarian needs. The challenge is immense. It needs collective action.

I visited Nigeria to show the solidarity and support of the European Union with the people of Nigeria. Especially to those who are suffering the results of the conflict with Boko Haram. They are not alone! I visited Yola, where I could see on the ground the devastating effects of the conflict. The needs are huge. Entire communities are fleeing their homes and are left with nothing. They settle in camps, empty schools and open fields. They have no source of revenue and depend on external aid. It is clear that we have to ensure that their basic needs are met!

An issue of major concern is the lack of humanitarian access in some areas due to the security situation. All efforts must be made to ensure that humanitarian organisations can reach those who need urgent help. I appealed to other donors to increase their presence. To step-up their response too. A joint effort is needed. The responsibility is collective. And so must be our actions. Humanitarian assistance alone is obviously not sufficient. We are only addressing the immediate emergency needs. All efforts should be made to bring this crisis to an end. To find long term, sustainable solutions for the region.

I visited IDPs camps in Yola. Humanitarians are present helping alleviate pain and suffering.

Children are the most vulnerable victims of the crisis. They are our priority.
