Film & Debate: The Dictator - Main contents

On September 11th 2015, the Montesquieu Institute and Filmhuis Den Haag showed The Dictator by Sacha Baron Cohen. A comedy with some serious undertones concerning the thin line between dictatorships and democracies.

The movie The Dictator, by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, shows dictator Aladeen who does everything to prevent the creation of a stable creation in his country. Yet, beyond the jokes the dictator shows how thin the lines can be between dictatorship and democracy. Not even to mention how Sacha Baron Cohen has shown how the rest of the world will fall over a dictator.

Professor André Gerrits i (chair of Russian History at Leiden University) discussed before the film the grey area between being a democracy or being a dictatorship.
