Liberal and Democrat MEPs, Hans van Baalen (VVD, The Netherlands) and Petras Auštrevičius (Liberal's Movement of Lithuania) have written an open letter to support the Dutch, Australian, Belgian, Malaysian and Ukrainian governments' request for an International Criminal Tribunal to bring those responsible for the downing of flight MH17 to justice.

ALDE Group leader, Guy Verhofstadt, who also co-signed the letter signed by 81 MEPs, asks for justice:

"It is unacceptable that one year after the tragedy, several hundred family members who lost their closest relatives are still waiting for clarity on who was responsible for downing the plane and killing all 298 people on board.

We urge Members of the UN Security Council to use the legal instruments at their disposal and to establish an International Criminal Tribunal to bring those responsible to justice."

MEP, Hans van Baalen, ALDE Group' spokesman on Russia and Ukraine, says:

"the European Parliament should support a UN tribunal to bring those responsible for the downing of the MH-17 to justice".

ALDE Group Vice-President, Petras Auštrevičius added:

This barbaric crime must be dealt with by an unconditioned response. Those who committed it, as well as who ordered, must be brought to justice. The United Nations has to prove its global mandate and take over this important investigation".

One year ago, on July 17, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over the Ukrainian territory. All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed.
