Slowakije wil alleen Christenen opnemen - Schriftelijke vraag aan de Commissie

Naar aanleiding van de berichtgeving op 19 augustus 2015 heb ik schriftelijke vragen gesteld aan de Europese Commissie. De Slowaakse overheid stelt namelijk dat het land wel asielzoekers wil opnemen, maar alleen als zij Christelijk zijn, omdat Moslims zich “niet thuis zouden voelen”. Dit is onacceptabel en een grove schending van het non-discriminatie beginsel op basis van religie. Hier moet snel en duidelijk tegen worden opgetreden. Zie hieronder de vragen die ik gesteld heb. Zodra ik het antwoord heb ontvangen zal dat ook hier terug te vinden zijn.

Under the EU relocation scheme, Slovakia has committed itself to taking in 200 Syrian refugees from Italy and Greece. On 19 August 2015, however, Ivan Metik, spokesperson for the Slovakian Interior Ministry, stated that Slovakia will only accept Christian Syrian refugees, and that Muslims will not be accepted because they “would not feel at home”. This prioritisation of Christians over Muslim, in the absence of any valid legal justification, clearly constitutes a violation of the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of religion, and therefore goes against the core values of the European Union as anchored in the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
