A high level seminar on ‘Economic Diplomacy and Foreign Policy: Friends or Foes?’, organised by the European Political Strategy Centre and the European External Action Service, will take place on 25 February in Brussels. The event, at which Vice President of the European Commission Jyrki Katainen will deliver a keynote address on European prosperity and economic diplomacy, will gather senior representatives of the European institutions, Member States business leaders and foreign policy experts to explore the concept of ‘economic diplomacy’ and its interplay with European foreign policy goals. As 90% of future world growth is expected to happen outside the EU, our own objectives of boosting jobs and growth for our citizens at home depend greatly on how well we can tap into this. The seminar will address the questions: How can we combine economic and political objectives and tools? What are the trade-offs in practice?

The European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) reports directly to the President and operates under his authority. It is composed of a professional staff of advisers, policy analysts and support staff with appropriate experience and track record, in order to provide professional and targeted policy advice to the President and the College.
EPSC provides strategic analysis and policy advice for the President on matters related to the policy priorities (as defined by the President in his political guidelines presented to the European parliament on July 15 2014), and outreach to decision-makers, think tanks and civil society at large.
The EPSC provides support to the President also on concrete initiatives, as well as policy advice of more long-term nature.
The External Action Service (EEAS) of the European Union is officially an autonomous body within the EU. It is in part the successor to the directorate general for external affairs of the European Commission, elements of Council's secretariat and supplemented by personnel from the member states. Its main task it to support the EU in making and implementing foreign and development policies. At the request of member states the EEAS acts as a diplomatic service.
The EEAS also co-ordinates EU activities such as the missions to Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. The European intelligence services is part of the EEAS as well.
