ALDE Party denounces death threats against former Prime Minister Kasyanov - Main contents
ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP has denounced the recent death threats against Russian Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, leader of the Russian ALDE Party member PARNAS.
The threat was published in a video on Instagram on 1 February and showed Mr Kasyanov during a recent visit to Strasbourg but seen through the lens of a sniper's target. Last February, Boris Nemtsov, co-leader of PARNAS, was murdered in Moscow.
his is just the latest example of how opposition parties in Russia routinely face intimidation for daring to act as and be a voice of opposition to the ruling powers in the country. European Liberals will continue to support our member parties in Russia. Sadly, this isn’t the first such instance, and I suspect it won’t be the last,” ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen said. "We can only protect our democratic partners and friends in Russia by protesting vocally if and when they are threatened and hold Putin accountabe for the actions of his proxies."
Russia is due to hold legislative elections on 18 September 2016.
