ALDE Party President condemns blackmailing against Free Democrats in Georgia - Main contents
On Friday 11 March the first tapes containing personal images of a female leader of Georgian ALDE Party member party Free Democrats (FD) were released. This week, Free Democrats have received more threats of disclosure of personal videos against more FD leaders, including Irakli Alasania. This public outrage takes place three weeks after one of the FD leaders, Alexi Petriashvili, was a victim of an armed attack suffering three gunshot wounds.
Hans van Baalen MEP, ALDE Party President, has condemned the blackmailing against Free Democrats leaders: "It is unacceptable that blackmailing against politicians, particularly against their personal lives, takes place in a democratic European country. Politicians should be merely judged on their political performance and not their private life. I demand an investigation to be carried out to identify who is to be held responsible for these threats."
