ALDE Party President votes Yes in Dutch referendum on EU-Ukraine agreement - Main contents
ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP full-heartedly voted Yes in yesterday's Dutch consultative referendum on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
One third of the Dutch electorate voted and around 60% of them voted No. Around 38% voted Yes.
Two thirds of the electorate ignored the referendum and stayed at home.
Given the fact that the 30% threshhold was passed (around 32% turnout), the Dutch Government has to consider how to interpret the advice of the voters and what to do with it. The advice is legally not binding. The position of the Government will be debated in the Dutch Parliament.
It would be wise that the other parties to the Association Agreement give the Dutch Government the time to consider its position and take a decision on how to proceed.
