National Security: a free licence for governement surveillance?

At the CPDP conference, Sophie in 't Veld participated in a panel discussion about the concept of national security, and how it is often invoked as a justification for measures limiting citizens' rights, rule of law, and transparency. She stressed that the latter are essential for a well-functioning democracy and that the concept of national security should be as narrow as possible.
