Directorate-General Health and Consumer Protection (SANCO)

This Directorate-General was responsible for EU legislation in the areas of food safety, safety of products, public health and consumer safety.

The main tasks of the DG were:

  • - 
    public health: combatting the use of tobacco, sharing of medical knowledge, prevent and help contain contagious diseases
  • - 
    food safety: production of food, import of safe food, prevention of plant and animal diseases
  • - 
    protection of consumers: ensuring that products are safe

On January 1st 2015 this DG was replaced by DG Health and Food quality i.
