Press Release - Air Services Agreement signed between the European Union and Sri Lanka - Main contents
The EU i’s bilateral aviation relations with Sri Lanka were further strengthened today, with the signing of the Agreement between the European Union and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on certain aspects of air services during an official ceremony in Brussels. The Agreement looks to safeguard fair access of all air carriers to routes between the EU and Sri Lanka and is expected to help the harmonisation of bilateral aviation agreements with EU law.
The Agreement was signed by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU, Ambassador George Zodiates, on behalf of the EU and Ambassador Pakeer Mohideen Amza on behalf of Sri Lanka. The European Commission was represented by the Director of Aviation and international Transport Affairs, Mr. Matthew Baldwin.
After the signing, Ambassador Zodiates expressed the Cyprus Presidency’s satisfaction for the signing of the Agreement, which is expected to enhance the overall cooperation between the Union and Sri Lanka.
“I very much hope that our strengthened bilateral relations will create reciprocal economic growth in the aviation sector which could, through its positive effects, stimulate in particular the development of tourism between the EU Member States and Sri Lanka,” Ambassador Zodiates said.
